AvailableCommunication

Overview

One-to-one messaging with voice and video calls, photos and files at original quality, and no advertising or conversation analytics.

Howdy is a native messaging and calling app built with C++ and Qt for speed and low battery use. It connects only to its own servers and its own TURN relay for calls.

Howdy is currently in invitation-based testing. Joining requires an invitation link issued for your phone number.

Capabilities

  • One-to-one messaging

Sent, delivered and read receipts, typing indicator, online and last-seen status.

  • Message actions

Reply to a specific message, forward, edit, delete for everyone, emoji reactions and conversation search.

  • Voice and video calls

Ringing, mute, speaker, front and rear camera switching, and cancelling a call before it is answered.

  • Original-quality media

Photos and files are sent without compression by default, with an optional compress choice when sending.

  • Voice messages

Recorded voice notes with a waveform view.

  • Private contact discovery

Your address book is matched using hashed numbers and is not stored on the server. People you have no connection with cannot see you.

We list these so expectations are clear. They are not part of the current release.

Security and privacy

  • Calls

Voice and video calls are encrypted with DTLS-SRTP.

  • Messages

Messages are encrypted in transit with TLS between your device and the Howdy server. They are not end-to-end encrypted yet, and we will not describe them that way until end-to-end encryption is implemented and verified.

  • No ads, no analytics

Howdy carries no advertising and does not analyze conversation content.

  • Push notifications

When the app is closed, Firebase Cloud Messaging is used only as a wake-up signal. No message text, sender name or media passes through it.
